Flattop Mountain Trail, Anchorage Alaska

Looking for a kid friendly hike in Anchorage Alaska? Look no further then the Flattop Mountain Trail.

Flattop Mountain is east of Anchorage in Chugach State Park. Flattop has a variety of trails for everyone aside from the summit trail with beautiful vistas. Kids of all ages will enjoy this gorgeous adventure as there are many options to explore the area without necessarily going to the summit. The trail is rocky, so make sure your little ones have appropriate footwear.

If you do want to check out the summit trail it is a 3.3 mile loop that, even though rated as "difficult" by All Trails can certainly be accomplished by even tiny hikers ( as evidence above!).

Pros

  • well trafficked area

  • beautiful wildflowers, views and wildlife

  • Easy access from Anchorage

Cons

  • Can be crowded

  • The trail can by dry and dusty in the heat of summer.

  • The trail can be muddy, icy, and slippery in spring and early summer, which can make carrying kids difficult. Families of really small children may want to wait until ideal conditions in mid to late summer.

Also, don't forget to bring your furry friends too! They are allowed on leash. â €
